My Students

Community Park? Check. Supply Supermarket? Check. Library? Check--but no books?! Our school-wide library mostly carries upper-level books and is severely lacking in lower-level, classic books. I am here to build our community library so my students can practice reading both at school and at home.

My 25 first-graders and 25 second-graders are hardworking, excited, and enthusiastic learners who all deserve the classroom library that I received when I attended elementary school in Chicago.

All of them living in low-income households, my students are beyond enthusiastic about how the school year is taking shape. Coming from one the lowest-performing public schools in New Orleans and now witnessing the transition to a highly-effective charter school model, my students are still in awe as they wander the newly-painted hallways, as they enter their heavily-themed "Building a Community" classroom, and on a day-to-day basis as they experience the structure that they so desperately deserved. My students are thrilled for 1st and 2nd grade and I can vouch for them when I say that even though most are behind grade-level, my students are eager to sit on our reading couch and dive into books.

My Project

I am asking for these specific books and resources because they are respected and loved by not only teachers, but by 1st and 2nd-graders around the world who are lucky enough to receive a stocked classroom library. Being able to have this library in my classroom will not only be helpful during activities like guided reading, shared reading, and read aloud, but there are also many parents who have expressed that they don't have any books at home--yet their children are always wanting to read. I recently handed out parent surveys with questions about their children. One question asked: "What are your child's favorite activities?" In most surveys, one of the child's favorite activities was listed as "Reading". Obviously, this is something they are doing at school because they do not have the resources to practice this necessary skill at home. Using these books, my students will master 1st Grade reading objectives like learning how to inference, summarize, and finding rhyming words.

Having a classroom library is essential to high classroom achievement and in forming a tight-knit community so that the teacher and students can come together to explore the power of the words and pictures that form a story.

With proper instruction, literacy can be a beautiful and powerful educational experience and I know that my students deserve to walk over to our library, pull out a classic book like Dr. Seuss's "Oh! The Places You'll Go", and explore the world through text.
