My 25 first-graders and 25 second-graders are hardworking, excited, and enthusiastic learners who all deserve the classroom library that I received when I attended elementary school in Chicago. All of them living in low-income households, my students are beyond enthusiastic about how the school year is taking shape. Coming from one the lowest-performing public schools in New Orleans and now witnessing the transition to a highly-effective charter school model, my students are still in awe as they wander the newly-painted hallways, as they enter their heavily-themed "Building a Community" classroom, and on a day-to-day basis as they experience the structure that they so desperately deserved. My students are thrilled for 1st and 2nd grade and I can vouch for them when I say that even though most are behind grade-level, my students are eager to sit on our reading couch and dive into books.
