I am a high school English teacher in urban setting. Each day I am inspired by my students who, against all odds, show up with an incredibly positive attitude to learn. Unfortunately, resources for these students are not what they should be and finding interesting and intellectually rich books can be a challenge. Budget cuts across the state and nation affect budgets for the school and thus affect my students’ ability to connect with their education. With not enough copies of novels or copies that are falling apart, it can be difficult to instill a reverence of literature. However, despite all of that my students are eager to read and engage in their education.

I know that a love of literature can be contagious, but it takes more than that. The students deserve novels that are enriching and relevant. I know that if students are introduced to a book that they can relate to, they will enjoy reading and will be more apt to pick up a book on their own.

The characters in the novel "The Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver—recommended reading for my students—are easily accessible and relatable to the students I teach. The conflicts in the novel mirror the adversities that my students face each day. That is why I believe reading this book will not only improve my students' critical reading and thinking skills but will also help them to realize their true potential.

I work with amazing people who give their time, energy, and often money in order to help the students learn. This donation would not only help me and my current students, but the teachers I work with, their students, and students in the years to come. A gift like this can reach and benefit hundreds of students. If we can work together to make these students see that reading can, in fact, be fun, I know that they will become more educated, interesting, and successful adults.
