My students need 45 containers to enhance our recycling program.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"We CAN save the planet, one can or plastic bottle at a time!" I am the library media specialist at a Pre K-5th grade elementary school in Nevada. The students in my school come from low income homes. I am one of the advisers for our Student Council. My Student Council committee is working towards a better community and one of our main focuses this year is recycling.

A couple of years ago we began recycling plastic shopping bags in the library. Our students have done a great job of helping make their parents aware of how long a plastic bag can sit in a landfill and encouraging their parents to recycle them. The money we raise buys new books for our library. Now our students are wanting to do more. They realize how much unnecessary garbage we create on our planet and they want to do their part to help. The Student Council at our school is taking the lead by creating a recycling committee. They have identified key areas where they feel they can make a difference. Earlier this year we wrote a Donors Choose grant to help us begin this quest and we received some large collection containers. Now we need some smaller bins to place in classrooms and work rooms around the school.

We want to create a recycling center in each classroom at our school. Each week committee members will be responsible for different jobs like picking up recycling from classrooms, cleaning, sorting, helping with drop offs at city recycling centers, and advertisement. We need some bins for classrooms to use to collect recycling and a few recycling centers around campus for our teachers and staff to collect recyclables in as well.

We all want to make our world a better place to live. Please help my students do their part by donating the supplies they need to carry out their vision. They have done their homework and written out a plan of action, now they need your help make their dream a reality.
