A Picture Opens a Thousand Little Minds

My students need a multimedia projector to get the most out of the curriculum and answer their thousand questions.

We are an inner-city neighborhood school with a high-need, limited English population that have an unstoppable curiosity about the world.

My students often lack the background knowledge required to comprehend the curriculum necessary to achieve state grade level standards. Second graders were born in a digital world and my classroom needs to catch up with them.

My second graders would tremendously benefit from real-world experiences an LCD projector would bring into my classroom. I have fantastic websites to share, but currently have to share them with one student at a time. My students don't have computers at home and school is their only exposure to the Internet. Our district has provided new science and social studies programs. Sadly, a large portion of this is software and web-based material. If only my class had a projector to share the vivid images of the butterfly cycle or the real time satellite pictures for all over the globe. They would immediately see the difference between their community, city, state, and country. Just imagine their excitement and feeling of empowerment as they present their science reports on an endangered animal to the class on the large projection screen, or the sharing of ideas on the many ways to approach a math word problem.

This donation will ensure that my second graders would have the world open up to them and foster the curiosity that leads to teachable moments. I will also be able to build their knowledge base and reach across several language barriers my students face everyday. This donation not only allows me to give access to my students, it also allows them the chance to use the technology to share their new knowledge with their classmates. Thank you for the chance to open these young curious minds.
