Mr. Armant Walter L Cohen High School
New Orleans, LA Grades 9-12

I teach 9th-12th Grade Fine Art Survey in an urban school located in Southeastern Louisiana. My area was one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. This is the first year this course is offered at our school, and it is academically underperforming and in a high-need community. 99.5% of my students are African American, and 100% of my students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch.

For the first time in almost a decade, art is now being offered at our high school. However, since that time the school has been plagued by budget cuts, hurricanes, and apathy. As a result, there are hardly any art supplies whatsoever in the entire building...no paint, no canvasses, no pastels. Without supplies, students would be forced to attempt to broaden their horizons without the tools necessary to do so. They would be expected to learn the material in the course without the necessary supplies, something that would be almost impossible to do. Simply put, we would be spinning our wheels reading about artists instead of becoming them ourselves.

By getting these supplies, students will be given opportunities to apply the material, opportunities like they've never had before. They will not only be able to read the textbook, but also to create hands-on projects that synthesize the material they've learned. They will be able to take pride in their works of art by photographing them with the digital cameras and sharing the photos with the community. Most importantly though, by having these basic art supplies, these students will not only master the material at hand, but they will learn that they are fully capable of making beautiful works of art.

You will make it possible for our students' minds to not only be enriched through art history, but also through their very own works of art.
