I am a Kindergarten English Language Learner teacher in an inner-city school in Indiana. We have a high poverty population thus qualifying us for Title I services and free lunch. I currently have 20 Hispanic children and 2 Asian children. I also have 15 girls and 7 boys.

My first priority in teaching my students is to teach them the English language. As they are learning the English language, I need to help them become proficient in their academics. I develop their English language skills through reading, writing, games, songs, center work, small group work, and one-on-one work. One of the best ways to develop language and build vocabulary is through creative (dramatic) play. Through this creative play, students can pretend and converse using their newly acquired English language skills. Students that are higher level English will help the lower English level students. This is also a great opportunity to develop their social skills. Children do not spend enough time just playing creatively. They are usually in front of the television or playing video games. Teachers are given funds at the beginning of each year in which to pay for new curriculum, supplemental supplies for the curriculum, and classroom supplies (pencils, crayons, glue, etc.). We are not given any other money during the school year. If teachers want any other items for their classroom, they have to purchase it with their own money. Teachers simply cannot afford to do this every year.

Many of my students have little or no toys at home which would afford them the opportunity to be creative. We have a very limited supply of creative play items in our classroom at the moment including a kitchen set, dollhouse, and some animals. We need more items to supplement and add to what we already have. The few dolls that we do have cannot be washed and are in very bad shape. We are in great need of items for boys, especially the animal collections. We have blocks that they could use to make buildings and environments for these animals.

Your help will not only add to the "fun" in my classroom, but would give students opportunities to create English language learning opportunities through their creative play. They would also have a chance to play with items that they do not normally have at home. Most importantly, they will be learning through their fun and won't even realize it!
