Can you imagine what it is like for a child to dive into an exciting book, but cannot go along on the adventure because they cannot read or understand what the story is about?

There is a diverse population of students that enter my classroom each and every year. Many of my students are English-Language-Learners (ELL) and cannot speak a word of English when they first arrive in our school. In addition, as a result of working in a low-income neighborhood, many of my students do not have access to good literature and as a result are reading significantly below grade level. It saddens me to see the frustration on my students' faces when they want so desperately to read what their peers are reading, but are not able to do so.

Although we have a nice assortment of fiction and non-fiction books (with accompanying Cd's and audio tapes) in our classroom, we have nothing to listen to them on. Our CD player is broken and as a result the books are just sitting on the shelf collecting dust! We would love a CD/Audio Cassette player to listen to our audio and CD books on. We can also use this cassette/CD player to tape the children reading so they can monitor themselves for fluency and accuracy. They will be so proud when they can actually hear the progress they are making! Tapes and CD's that come with a copy of the book are particularly valuable, because students can follow along as the narrator reads. These books not only provide children with an avenue to expand their vocabulary, they also enrich their multi-sensory experiences with books. Hearing a book read on tape helps them see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give them an important introduction to listening — a skill that they must master in order to learn to read!

With your help, my students will be able to immerse themselves in rich literature and embark on exciting adventures with every turn of a page! Imagine helping to motivate and engage even the most reluctant readers to pick up a book and read. Not only will their confidence soar as they learn the proper pronunciation of words and expand their vocabulary, but they will get to go on adventures that only good literature can take them!
