Please Help, Learning Our ABC's is Not That EZ!

My students need alphabet games that contain many different media such as magnets, toys, markers, stamps, cubes, plastic letters, foam pictures, and much more.

My school is very culturally diverse, over sixty percent of our student body speaks two languages or is learning English as their second language. The school is located in a low income area and it is necessary for all of our student body to receive free breakfast, lunch, and snacks during the school day.

I teach kindergarten so I give young children their first school experiences. Many of my students arrive knowing very little or no English at all. In order to communicate I try to teach using hands-on methods and fun games that students can touch and move in order to learn. The materials I am requesting are all games and activities that would enrich my students’ education and allow them to practice important reading concepts. For many of my students school is the only place they can learn; unfortunately, they receive little support at home.

My students will begin reading in kindergarten and the hardest challenge that they face will be learning the letters and sounds of the alphabet. For many of my bilingual students, the alphabet contains sounds that are not in the language they speak at home. It is because of this that many of them confuse sounds or pronounce them incorrectly. We spend the majority of the year practicing these sounds so that students can read properly by the time they leave for first grade. Many students become discouraged because of the language barrier and simply give up at school. The games I am requesting will teach the students the alphabet while they work in groups independently which will reinforce the concepts I have already taught them. These games will excite the students, as they contain materials the students will love to touch and move to demonstrate their knowledge. In these games students use different materials to identify letters, match letters to corresponding sounds, and identify letter sounds in words.

Your donations will make reading possible for the kindergarten students in my class. Once they have mastered the alphabet sounds, their foundation for reading will be established and their reading will take off! These games will help both my current students and many classes to come learn their alphabet. Due to your generosity, they will begin their formal education in first grade with confidence and reading skills that will continue to enrich their lives forever.
