Geschichten des Überlebens (Stories of Survival)

My students need 10-15 copies of 4 different non-fiction texts for our in-depth study of non-fiction.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ask my students and they will tell you that my classroom is a fun place to read and write. This is the goal of any teacher but for me allowing my inner city 8th graders a safe place to learn and grow is key. I currently teach at an inner city charter school that focuses on giving the students who wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity to a quality education the very best. We dedicate ourselves, both students and staff, to giving our all no matter what. So despite having students who cannot purchase supplies or books, we do whatever it takes to make sure that their learning is not hindered by circumstance.

I am requesting four different non-fiction titles written about the Holocaust for a unit in which we will take a deeper look at the Holocaust and the stories of survival. Life has given my students a variety of challenges to overcome and I believe that by doing this unit they will understand the human condition of pain and struggle as one that is universally felt regardless of race, religion or creed not just an isolated issue.

With the books, we will be able to all read around the same theme but in different books. I have struggled to meet the individual reading needs of each students while they are all reading various books but with the small reading groups I will br able to focus on the needs of the students one group at a time. My students reading levels range from 5-12 grade. These titles will help me focus on grouping them with readers at similar levels and work on the areas of special concern for each. This type of differentiation will allow for more valuable work time in class.

With your help, my students will have the opportunity to journey into the life of a Holocaust survivor and experience literature at its best. Without your help this unit will lack the resources needed to meet each student where they are. Thanks in advance for doing "Whatever It Takes" to make sure that my students can have this experience.
