I am a first grade teacher in a rather large elementary school. We have thirteen classrooms, grades K-5. We have a significant transient population because of a nearby military base and serve many students who have parent(s) deployed overseas.

First graders require new learning to be presented in a concrete way. Some of our math concepts can be challenging for them to "see" and understand because they seem abstract or "just math". Geometry and complex patterns can be very difficult for students to understand and see a connection to real-life.

With a digital camera, small groups of students can work together to observe their surroundings and locate geometry and patterns at work. By taking photographs, we can create visual evidence/a visual log of these concepts - i.e. a pattern in the carpet, a grid on the wall or ceiling tiles, angles on the playground equipment. The possibilities are endless and this would be an year-long, ongoing learning experience.

With your contribution, a first grader can begin to see that math is all around, in nearly every aspect of our lives. You will make it possible for my students to forge a connection from the concrete to the abstract, transferring practice into a solid knowledge base for future studies in math and geometry.
