Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When my students entered my classroom on the first day of school, they were 5 grade levels behind in reading, and they rarely picked up a book. Now, my students ask everyday "Are we reading today?" Without engaging, challenging books, their goal of becoming better, more avid readers won't come true.

Most of my students grow up in a household and neighborhood that does not encourage literacy.

Some of my students admit to never having read an entire book before coming to my class. This does not mean, however, that these students do not want to read-- they simply have not had the resources available to them. No one has handed them a great novel and said "You should read this." I have put numerous books, articles, poems, essays, etc. in my students' hands this year, and with every page they turn, they seem to learn that reading is a privilege and a pleasure. They cannot wait to get caught up in the minds of the characters in our novels, or picture themselves in the settings that are so vividly detailed. My students are inspiring, dedicated learners, who, with the appropriate resources, excel far beyond the imagination of most people in their community.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of a brilliant novel entitled "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier." As freshmen, my students have dealt with a lot of emotional, social, and physical changes this year. For most of my students, these changes come with a great deal of trauma: gang violence, beatings, abuse, and so much more. All of which form who my students are. This is a part of their world as it is also a part of Ishmael Beah's world. Beah's memoir discusses one boy's struggle to find himself and his freedom. My students are also searching for themselves and their way out of a struggling community. With this novel, my students will not only receive insight into a young boy's mind, they will also have the rare opportunity to learn about a different part of the world. My students know very little about anything outside their street corner in urban Illinois. This novel will surely be one of the most memorable books my students ever read.

My school does not have the budget to purchase any books for my class- without this novel, there will be nothing for my students to read.

This novel is so important to me because "A Long Way Gone" will be an extremely powerful read for my students. Once completing this rigorous, captivating novel, my goal is for my students to reflect back on this year of intensive reading practice and realize the long way they have come in their reading skills and their development as an individual.
