Bring a Small Scale Chemistry Lab to an Alternative School

My students need 62 chemicals and laboratory equipment, from electronic balances to silver nitrate.

My classroom is full of second-chance kids. I teach chemistry to sophomores, juniors and seniors at an alternative high school. We cater to a population of students who stopped attending their previous schools because of pregnancy, drugs, gang involvement, or an otherwise unsafe environment. However, my students are not “bad kids.” They have passed rigorous admissions standards, chosen to uphold the school’s high expectations, and would like to change their lives for the better. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 11-12) and provide each student with the personalized attention they need to succeed, and hopefully go on to college.

These students lack a classroom equipped with a chemistry laboratory. Unlike a traditional high school, we do not have lab tables, Bunsen burners, balances, and the other requisite supplies for offering a hands-on learning experience in chemistry. With only books and pencils, limited progress is possible for students who would grasp abstract content best with interactive experiments. While our school has done an outstanding job of making do with available funding, there are essential laboratory materials that we just do not have. Unfortunately, we cannot afford basic supplies.

Chemicals such as potassium iodide, copper, and sodium chloride will be fundamental to my small-scale chemistry laboratory. By using low hazard chemicals, students can still carry out classic experiments in a non-traditional chemistry classroom. Basic laboratory equipment such as funnels, electronic balances, and Erlenmeyer flasks will also enable my students to carry out labs. With a small-scale chemistry lab, my students will have the opportunity to work directly within the field of chemistry and understand real-life applications of difficult material. Small-scale chemistry supplies allow me to teach chemistry in the way it is meant to be taught— as an interactive, hands-on learning experience. My students will feel empowered as learners when they are able to complete chemistry labs. They will feel compelled to take the subject seriously when they are given serious tasks. From the very first day they arrive, the supplies will be integrated into the curriculum and relied upon heavily to empower student learning.

By donating even a tiny amount to this project, you are facilitating a better learning environment for my second-chance students. They can have positive and effective learning experiences in the chemistry classroom, but they need the tools to succeed. Your contribution can provide those materials. My students need your support!
