Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach fourth grade, however for the 2008 - 2009 school year I will loop with my current fourth grade students to teach them as fifth graders. 70% of the elementary school student body where I teach is comprised of English Language Learners. This means most of them come from a home where the family primarily speaks a language (typically Spanish) other than English. Approximately 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunches and the area where my students live is considered low income. All of my students have many types of learning styles, strengths, weaknesses and personalities.

Immediately after my students return from the school library my students beg to have some time to read their newly checked out books. New books excite them and they love to show each other the books they have checked out. My classroom library doesn't inspire this same excitement. Even less exciting is the fact that most students who read below grade level don't get excited about reading novels because they typically are unsuccessful when they read them. Students who read below grade level tend to check out "I Spy" books and cookbooks because they feel safe reading them.

To help my students who read below grade level to gain confidence and build up their reading endurance, I need more books in my classroom library that challenge them academically and at the same time meet them at their reading level. They need to become more comfortable choosing and reading books on their own. The books I have selected for this proposal contain topics that interest my students and are at their reading level.

Research shows that students who are engaged with their reading choices improve drastically in their reading ability. Your contribution ensures that my students who read below grade level have access to high interest children's books that provide them with the boost of confidence they need to truly become successful readers.
