C2i: Imagination Station in the Library

My students need an HP mini Netbook with its smaller, more kid-friendly keyboard to expand and extend their library research.

My Students

Remember those kid-friendly Suzuki violins that were developed for the small hands of young children? It is the same thing with computer keyboards. Every day my students struggle to use the oversize adult keyboard in the library. They desperately need the smaller keyboard on a mini netbook.

Every week I work with every child in library.

Over half of them qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. And although they represent the very best in America, many students do not have the funds for necessary school supplies or reading materials. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. The population in the neighborhood is changing. According to the last US Census, the average per capita income in our area is about a third lower than the rest the city. Of our families, 18.4% receive Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multi-racial. Nearly 10% are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. Since we are near two military bases, we have a significant number of military families.

My Project

Our library serves a population that has a significant number of at-risk students who are military dependents. At our school, we have students, particularly males in primary grades K-three, who are in danger of failing the key academic areas of reading, science and math. They often cannot find anything they want to read and research in the library. We need something different. We are trying traditional approaches with textbooks but we really need something that will appeal to uninspired non-readers. Technology fires their imaginations but the large keyboard on the library computer is not appropriate. It forces them to stretch their fingers and develop poor key board skills. We plan to use mini Netbook with its age-appropriate design to do library research on animals, earthquakes, and the weather as well as author studies. Students will illustrate and create Voice Thread presentations which can be shared with the school and also linked to parents who are serving abroad.

Technology should not create barriers.

Technology in our library should help overcome the very real barriers to high-level literacy that our students experience. A mini Netbook with its smaller keyboard can create interest and excitement in library research projects. It will reduce some very real barriers that these students face. Every day my students struggle to use an adult-size keyboard in the library. They desperately need a smaller one.
