Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has recently acquired space in a beautiful urban garden next to our school. My 11th grade class would like to clean the garden (it's a bit neglected and overgrown) and plant our school garden, which will be used as an outdoor classroom. My class will maintain the garden weekly, monitor the weather station, and participate in activities that help link NYC core curriculum concepts to what they experience in the garden.
Students will benefit from this outdoor classroom because they will be learning through doing, while building self confidence through creating a place that benefits the school as well as the community. Students will also perform better in other classes as a result of getting a taste of the outdoors (our cafeteria is dreadful) and a bit of exercise!
I teach 11th Grade Earth Science at Bronx Leadership Academy II, which is an underserved public high school where 100% of the students receive free lunch.
My class is in need of a set of gardening gloves, heavy duty work gloves (for picking up broken glass), and some gardening tools.
By the time many students reach high school, they are tired of the classroom setting. Breaking up the classroom routine with the outdoor classroom, students will be more engaged. What an amazing thing to have 30 students who have never planted a tomato before, soon eating from a variety of crops they grew! I would like to give my 11th grade earth science students a chance to get outside, help the community, gain self confidence, see where their food comes from, and learn a few important life skills at the same time.
