Ms. Flynn CICS - Basil
Chicago, IL Grades 3-5

I teach twenty five amazing third graders in Chicago's South Side, in a low-income, primarily African American neighborhood. My students are bright, curious, and already possess a love of reading. They are at that exciting age when they begin to read to learn rather than learn to read. Earlier this year, I noticed that many of my third graders had taken to reading books in partners or small groups. It was then that I got the idea of doing book clubs every month, Oprah style. I just launched my first clubs, and what a success they are! I give up a lunch period three days a week to meet with each book club and facilitate the discussion. I have three different clubs going right now, to suit the various needs and levels of my diverse student body. The clubs have been a tremendous success, and my students have never been so excited or confident about their reading. The problem is that I have very few book sets with which to do book clubs. In fact, after next month, I'll be out of the sets I currently have available, and will need to find a way to supply the students with multiple copies of the same book. Short of visiting every library in Chicago or asking the students to buy the books themselves (not possible for many), there isn't much I can do. I can't let something like a lack of resources get in the way of the exciting new reading program I see unfolding before my eyes. Not only are my students more confident and excited about reading when they're doing book clubs, but they are strengthening their comprehension skills as well! Through discussion with one another, the students are raising questions and making connections as they read. In short, they are reading like adults! Being in books clubs, my students are beginning to see that reading isn't just another subject in school, but a lifelong habit to enjoy. With the books I've requested, I would be able to run book clubs for the rest of the year and help my students advance to higher levels of reading and comprehension. The books would be used year after year and would be an invaluable resource to me and my students.
