Building Connections: Badminton, An Inclusive PE Program for Every Student

My Project

Every student deserves a place where they feel successful, included, and connected on a team. For many of our middle school students in grades 6–8, physical education is one of the few classes where they have an opportunity to build relationships, work as a team, experience success, and develop healthy habits in a supportive environment. We need a racquet cart, racquets, and birdies. Learning and playing badminton daily in gym class will build confidence and encourage students to choose badminton during intramurals and compete against other classes.

Many face challenges outside of school that can affect their confidence, relationships, motivation, and ability to fully engage in the classroom.

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, abilities, and life experiences. We want our PE program to be more than simply a place to "play sports." We want it to be a place where students learn how to communicate, encourage one another, solve problems together, manage frustration, and discover activities they can enjoy throughout their lives. We hope they will remember their middle school badminton unit forever.
