Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are a diverse group of 6th-grade readers, including multilingual learners who come to the classroom with different experiences, strengths, and reading abilities. One of my biggest goals is to help every student see themselves as a capable reader while also challenging them to grow. Engaging novels like Coraline and Restart give students stories they can genuinely get excited about while building important skills like comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and meaningful discussion.

Through this project, I hope to provide enough copies of these novels for both of our 6th-grade ELA classrooms so that every student can have a book in their hands.

Having complete class sets means students can not only read and discuss the novels together at school, but they can also take their copies home and continue reading independently. We know how important it is for students to read for at least 20 minutes each night, and having direct access to the novel removes one more barrier between our students and consistent reading.

Ultimately, my goal is to prepare our students for the rigor of the next grade level by building their reading stamina, comprehension, and confidence through completing full-length novels. More importantly, I want them to walk away from these books thinking, “I read the whole thing, I loved the whole thing, and I want to do it again.”
