My Project

Where I Teach

My 7th and 8th graders are a dynamic, creative group of readers and writers who are working hard to analyze literature, write persuasively, and express their voices.

My general education classroom includes several vibrant inclusion classes where neurodiverse students—including those with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing differences—learn right alongside their peers. Middle school demands a lot of sustained focus, and my goal is to build an inclusive environment where every student, regardless of learning style, has the tools to succeed.

Our Project

Reading complex texts and writing multi-paragraph essays requires deep concentration, but standard classroom environments aren't always built for neurodiverse brains. Harsh overhead fluorescent lights and rigid furniture can trigger sensory fatigue, anxiety, and restlessness—especially for students processing complex literary concepts.

This project brings subtle, age-appropriate sensory supports into our ELA classroom to help all students regulate and focus:

* Fluorescent Light Covers & Soft Lamps: Muting the intense glare of overhead lights creates a warm, reading-friendly atmosphere that reduces eye strain and visual distraction during independent reading and writing blocks.

* Chair Fidget Bands: These discrete foot bands fit right onto standard middle school chairs, giving students a quiet, non-disruptive way to channel energy and improve focus while keeping up with class discussions.

* Sensory & Focus Supplies: Flexible tools that blend seamlessly into a secondary classroom, helping students self-regulate without drawing unwanted attention.
