Let's Get Off Technology

Help me give my students building toys and interactive games to learn through active, imaginative, and hands-on play.

My Project

Second graders are naturally curious, creative, and eager to explore how things work. At this age, students learn best when they can touch, build, experiment, make mistakes, and try again. Dominoes, Lincoln Logs, and magnetic building blocks will allow me to create a hands-on building center where my students can develop important academic and social-emotional skills through play and problem-solving.

These materials will give my second graders opportunities to practice spatial reasoning, fine-motor skills, mathematical thinking, engineering concepts, creativity, and perseverance.

Students can use Dominoes to explore patterns, sequencing, cause and effect, and measurement. Lincoln Logs can encourage students to think about balance, structure, symmetry, and design. Magnetic blocks can help students explore shapes, geometry, three-dimensional structures, and spatial relationships. Games such as Tic-Tac-Toe will encourage students to think critically about strategies while interacting and communicating with one another.

Building and playing together will strengthen collaboration and communication. Students will have to explain their ideas, listen to classmates, solve disagreements, and work together toward a shared goal. When a structure falls, students learn that failure is not the end of the process—it is an opportunity to rethink, redesign, and try again.

Building toys and games will allow my students to actively create and explore together, rather than simply watching or tapping on a screen alone.
