My Project

Help me inspire our next generation of Oceanographers and Marine biologists! As Captain Planet says, "The power is YOURS!" By installing a saltwater fishtank in the media center, I am in the unique position to give the entire student body access to the wonders inherent in maintaining a saltwater tank. We need items like a glass aquarium, rock arches, filters, LED lights, circulation pumps, and heater.

Being an educator in a Title I school in Florida, I believe that it is immensely important to teach our children about the importance of our oceans and their fragile ecosystems to the well-being of our planet.

By taking ownership and instilling in them a sense of agency over the tank, the students will learn about marine ecology, aquatic life and life cycles, the effect of pollution on our oceans, and even how all life on earth is interconnected, including the smallest corals in the farthest seas.

Another benefit of having an appealing, colorful, and stimulating saltwater fishtank in the media center is the calming affect it will have on our students. Studies published on both PsychologyToday.com and in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health show positive correlations between increased mood, heightened relaxation, and decreased anxiety when observing fish tanks containing live fish and plants. Individuals with learning disorders or who are on the autism spectrum can also find comfort in the rhythmic movements and water sounds associated with the tank. This would be a huge asset to our Title I school as it hosts one of our district's only IBI units.

Lastly, but definitely not least, providing a saltwater fishtank would enrich the lives of the students and the staff at our school. The bright colors will spark joy and inspire creativity in the lives our our kiddos. They love to name the fish and tell stories about how the fish interact with each other.
