Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I grew up here in Toppenish and attended school in the same community where I now teach. When I walked into kindergarten, I spoke Spanish and no English. I remember what it felt like when the language around me wasn't my own and reading felt like something meant for somebody else. Years later, I came back home as an English teacher.

I want my freshmen to start high school believing that reading can belong to them.

I teach freshman English Language Arts and reading intervention, including students who enter high school reading below grade level. Some have struggled with reading for years and no longer see themselves as readers. Rather than choosing books for them, I asked my students what they actually wanted to read and built this project around their answers: manga, graphic novels, sports, horror, mystery, romance, popular series, and books in Spanish. The books will support our English 9 curriculum as we explore identity, belonging, family, culture, and perspective, while giving students something just as important: choice.

Throughout the year, students will earn books by showing effort, growth, and progress. When they do, the book doesn't come back to my classroom. They choose it. They take it home. It becomes theirs. In a community where students don't have a school library to visit, I want to remove one more barrier between a teenager and a book. Maybe it gets read at home, shared with a sibling or friend, or becomes the first book they finish because they wanted to. I entered school speaking no English; now I get to put books into the hands of freshmen growing up in my community and say, “This one is yours.”
