My Project

My students - Special Ed and Reading Intervention kiddos - have found that books in verse are highly accessible for them! Therefore, I am trying to create a Book Club of books in verse for next year.

Each of these books has been specifically chosen for its high interest topic that caters to my students interest:

Before the Ever After: Many of my boys feel they will become Pro-NFL stars, but they don’t think about how it could affect them/their body in the end. This book explores just that concept.

The Poet X: A coming of age story for my 7th/8th grade girls, that relate to society today.

House Arrest: 50% of my students live below the poverty line, and do whatever they can to support their family. This book explores a family below the poverty line, a brother how stole to help his family, the consequences of stealing to support your family, and other paths you can follow.

Alone: Many of my students love fantasy books, and this is a perfect fit! A girl goes to slumber party and wakes up to a world where she is the only living person and the only other living creature is a dog.

Forget Me Not: This book explores the idea of having a condition that makes life harder (which many of my students have - such as dyslexia) Tourette’s syndrome. Moreover, it looks at how constantly changing schools - and having a learning condition - makes life difficult. My students will identify this, as so many move from school to school or worse are homeless and struggle to find a place to call “home.”
