My Project

My manga and graphic novel collection is a small but very popular collection in the school library. It has the highest borrowing rates of all the print collections. I love that the students are always making recommendations or requests for specific series to add to the collection or continue!

Reading manga has so many benefits for students.

They are building their visual literacy skills because while reading manga, students decode and find the meaning of words and images simultaneously. These visual literacy skills can be applied to science, math, and more!

Manga also makes reading fun, rather than a chore they are forced to do. They feel like they're hardly reading, but when students read manga, they read a lot more than they think. They will read the whole series, try other series, or even transition to chapter books! It is really exciting to see how starting with manga makes students into readers.
