Putting Evidence-Backed Literacy Education to Work

Literacy is the foundation of learning, but many students today are struggling to read at grade level. Rooted in decades of research from fields like cognitive science, linguistics, applied psychology, and education, the science of reading breaks down how to teach essential components of reading acquisition and practice.

Supporting educators with effective training and resources for evidence-based literacy instruction helps ensure more students develop strong reading skills that carry them through school and beyond.

Teachers: Access and Implement the Science of Reading Fundamentals

Through the online, self-paced Science of Reading Fundamentals microcredential course, developed and peer-reviewed by SUNY faculty, teachers can understand how children learn to read, along with research-backed strategies that strengthen classroom instruction right away. The course is trusted by districts across New York and the Maryland State Department of Education and is designed to complement any high-quality literacy curriculum already in use. Participants can earn one graduate credit from SUNY at no additional cost.

Full-time, public school, public charter school, and Head Start teachers can use DonorsChoose to request this low-cost program.
