While I control the settings, adjusting the lighting for different activities has helped set the tone for learning. The sixth, seventh, and eighth graders that I teach were excited when the new games were delivered. It felt like Christmas morning! They volunteered to help take the plastic off the boxes and shuffle the decks of cards. Some of the students have asked to play with me. That's wonderful, because I love seeing how they're thinking while they play. Others have asked if they can try the games on their own. This is great, too! I've overheard them READING the rules, discussing the rules, and then modifying them if they need to. The modifications they make are always to help a struggling classmate. What teacher wouldn't feel proud about that? \r\n\r\nMy last class of the day especially likes playing Play on Words and Blurt. The boys that play Play on Words challenge each other to find words spelled with four letters instead of just three. The students that play Blurt are expanding their vocabulary by providing additional clues to help others get to the correct answer. \r\n\r\nAll of the games have been played and will continue to be played throughout this year and in future years. I work with some of my students for three years in a row. By using the stand up desk, I am able to quickly adjust the desk to a good height for my students, as they lay their math practice packets on the shelf. With this desk students gather around, so I can check and reteach a concept to numerous students at a time. My middle schoolers also learn from their peers or when I am explaining it to another student.
