When the items first arrived, students were excited to see the variety of snacks available, and they quickly became a resource that students knew they could access when they needed a little extra fuel during the school day.\r\n\r\nAs a school counselor, I see firsthand how difficult it can be for students to focus on learning when a basic need isn't being met. Whether a student missed breakfast, needs a snack to get through the afternoon, or unexpectedly needs a feminine hygiene product, these supplies allow us to quietly and immediately meet that need so they can return their attention to the school day.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts of this project has been seeing students become comfortable asking for what they need. Students will stop by my office for a snack or hygiene product without embarrassment or judgment, and sometimes that quick visit also opens the door for a conversation or check-in. What may seem like a small resource can help students feel supported, cared for, and connected at school.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, these supplies will continue to be available to students throughout the school year. As we work on social-emotional skills, self-advocacy, and helping students recognize when they need support, having tangible resources available reinforces an important message: it is okay to ask for help.
