These gripping historical fiction stories introduce real-world challenges that we explore through hands-on experiments, engineering projects, and scientific investigations. As students read about volcanoes, shipwrecks, and bear attacks, they apply problem-solving skills to design crazy volcanoes, build model boats to test buoyancy, and use technology to discover the wonders of our National Parks. These activities not only deepen comprehension but also encourage creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork—key skills in both reading and STEM learning.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading goes beyond the pages of a book and into real-world applications. Students eagerly collaborate on STEM challenges inspired by the disasters in I Survived, using what they learn from the stories to test and refine their designs. A student, inspired by I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, designed a boat to test different materials for flotation. These books have not only ignited a love for reading but have also sparked curiosity and hands-on learning, making our classroom an exciting place where literature and STEM come together.","fullyFundedDate":1737408804270,"projectUrl":"project/i-survived-stem-study/9070794/","projectTitle":"I Survived STEM Study","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kosel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9902267"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_38262","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":552,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":29,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":89,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":69.0,"schoolId":38262,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Starr Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Starr Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/new-richmond-school-district/starr-elementary-school/38262"}
