My students absolutely love them, and they are being used all day long. When a student is overwhelmed or dysregulated, we can guide them to the chair and watch their whole body start to relax. Several students have learned to go to the chair on their own when they need it. Since most of my students are nonverbal, being able to see their bodies relax and know they are feeling better means so much. We are now working on helping them learn to recognize when they need a break and choose the spinning chair independently. Thank you for giving my students something that helps them feel calm, safe, and ready to learn!\r\n\r\nOur next step is helping my students learn how to stay regulated while joining in with the rest of the class. I use the spinning chairs in our sensory area, but I have also started using them during whole-group time. Some of my students really struggle to sit and be part of the group, but when they sit in the spinning chair, they can stay with us and participate with a few prompts. For some of my students, it is the only way I can get them to join us right now. Sitting, listening, and following new expectations can be really hard for them. I truly believe that if the chair is what helps them get through the first step of joining the group, then we are already halfway there. From there, we can keep working on helping them participate more and more on their own. I am so thankful to have something that is making such a difference for my kids!\r\n\r\nThank you for you kindness. The children love the chest of building planks. Whenever we use them we dramatically dump all 1000 planks on the floor into a great big pile. The children choose to either work by themselves or with a friend or two. Now that they have used them a few times, we also add other blocks, ramps, marbles, and other embellishments to our structures. We usually stop building when all 1000 planks have been used!\r\n\r\n We recently did a science unit on how to be a play engineer. The wooden planks were available to use in conjunction with our varied types of blocks to make marble runs. The children's creations were varied in size and construction methods. We made marble runs over a three day time period and will continue for two more days. I have two classes of K5 children and each class took the activity in entirely different directions. We moved tables to the edge of the room and every available carpet was used by a different set of one, two, or three children. The classroom was a buzz of activity, and it had an overall feeling of pure joy. One boy exclaimed three times in one building session, \"I'm a genius!\" One can not ask for any higher level of engagement, enthusiasm, and pride in ones work.\r\n\r\n\r\nThank you for providing this amazing resources to my classroom. It will be used by many children for many years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1778061973856,"projectUrl":"project/steam-in-a-chest-1000-wooden-building/10191065/","projectTitle":"STEAM In A Chest - 1000 Wooden Building Planks!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morrell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3919708_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1708992263376","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/n-morrell"},{"teacherId":10278572,"projectId":9757821,"letterContent":"We are using the new resources to teach our girls important life skills that go far beyond the classroom. Through activities like embroidery, we are helping students build patience, focus, and confidence while also having meaningful conversations about hygiene, self-care, and how these habits support both physical and mental health. These lessons have created a safe space for the girls to open up, learn from one another, and understand the importance of taking care of themselves and others.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and genuine. They were incredibly grateful and thankful, and many could not wait to get started. Seeing their enthusiasm and appreciation was a powerful moment, and it was clear how much these resources meant to them. They truly felt supported and encouraged, knowing that others cared enough to invest in their growth and learning.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students include expanding into cooking skills while continuing our focus on self-care and giving back to the community. The girls will be creating blankets for dogs and cats at the local humane society, allowing them to practice compassion and service. They will also begin learning how to crochet and make small trinkets, helping spark creativity, build new interests, and develop skills they can carry with them for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1763498237113,"projectUrl":"project/building-sisterhood-building-futures-l/9757821/","projectTitle":"Building Sisterhood, Building Futures: Life Skills for Girls of Color","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Austin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10278572"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37802","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":504,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":34,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":28,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"25.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.9,"schoolId":37802,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hamlin Garland School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hamlin Garland School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/milwaukee-public-schools/hamlin-garland-school/37802"}
