My students have become genuinely excited about our daily reading time. They follow along together, turn the pages together, discuss what is happening, and regularly ask to keep reading. For students with a wide range of reading abilities, having their own copy has allowed everyone to participate in the same story and be part of our classroom reading community.\r\n\r\nThe novel has also connected beautifully with our word study and history lessons. We have been learning Greek and Latin roots, and my students get especially excited when they recognize one of those roots in the book. Those moments help them see that vocabulary, mythology, history, and reading aren't separate subjects—they are connected.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has helped my students experience reading as something enjoyable that we do together. Thanks to your kindness, our library now has a Polaroid camera, and we have been having a blast documenting our learning!\r\n\r\nIn a world with so many screens and digital photos, it is really special to take and print a physical photo. Some of the Polaroids, students have taken home with them, and some we have posted on our bulletin board. So much fun to be making crabs, sharks, whales, beavers, and fish. Seeing how the students design their puppets as individuals is especially fun. They especially love to bedazzle them a bit.\r\n\r\nI have out dozens of sea animal-related books in the library, along with related posters. Something that's been especially neat has been in using the puppets in classes with students with special needs. A recent class of 1st-3rd graders with profound autism were in the library, and while most of the students are non-verbal, they were definitely working to communicate through their puppets. It's awesome that students are able to keep their puppets and continue to have it to play with. I promoted fort-building as a family activity at one of our recent literacy nights and students have used the fort-building supplies in library classes.\r\n\r\nI started by pairing Elisha Cooper's new book \"The Rare Bird\" with fort-building. In the book, a little cat dreams that it is a bird, inspired by a book. Then the book is read a new book about elephants and dreams of being an elephant. It is a book all about imagination and makes a great starting point for students before they start to build.\r\n\r\nWe also enjoyed having a tower building competition in a second grade class with the foam builders yesterday, which had everyone smiling and laughing as they got higher and higher, before eventually tumbling over!
