The students are often hungry and many do not bring snacks from home. Having a snack mid-day helped the students better focus on their work instead of being distracted by rumbling stomachs.\r\n\r\nHaving time each day to enjoy a snack together also built a sense of community by providing time to take a break and have some classroom discussions. The students felt cared for by having their needs met. This donation helps over 40 students. The articles cover science topics like protecting coral reefs. Social studies topics such as the branches of government. One issues that really interested some students featured a story about the increased popularity of flag football.\r\n\r\nI use the magazines to teach about features of nonfiction texts. For example students identify the titles, headings, picture captions, graphs, and diagrams.
