The materials provided through this project have given students the 21st century hands-on learning they need to succeed. In my classroom I like to focus on activities that build skills in communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking (the 4 C's). The best way to achieve this in a STEAM classroom is to provide hands-on activities and projects with limited guidance from the teacher so that students must work together to achieve a common goal. By providing projects with limited criteria, the student must use their creativity to meet the goal of the project, rather than just following a list of directions. Prior to having the materials provided through this project, the classes only had a few kits with specific instructions. While these kits did challenge them and push them to use patience, communication, and collaboration skills, they did not enhance their creativity or critical thinking skills.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part about the new materials is the hands-on experiences for students. Many of the supplies received through this project seem like ordinary office supplies, but with them we have been able to conduct many experiments including building ziplines to safely transport ping pong balls, finger print analysis, and various labs about crime scene analysis. The students especially enjoyed the handheld digital microscopes and were excited to explore many common items and surfaces within the classroom. They cannot wait until it is warm enough to take them outside for exploration. The digital microscopes were especially appealing to students who were generally not at all motivated to participate in class activities. These students often ask when they get to use the microscopes again!","fullyFundedDate":1764613902122,"projectUrl":"project/building-self-esteem/9859730/","projectTitle":"Building Self-Esteem","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Braatz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10333074"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_38312","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":186,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":90,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"9.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":38.5,"schoolId":38312,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Menominee Indian Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Menominee Indian Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/menominee-indian-school-district/menominee-indian-middle-school/38312"}
