My third grade students are thrilled to have this collection of new graphic novels. My students love to read during the thirty minutes of independent reading that follows lunch recess each day.\r\n\r\nI was excited to share these new graphic novels last week. I held up each book and read the titles and blurbs yesterday. My students were very excited, too. Every new book was quickly snatched up! Students seem particularly excited to read Frizzy, Beetle & the Hollowbones, and Ghost Book. The Crossover is a book we already have in our room in regular written form. It's a novel-in-verse. Students who had read that previously were eager to read the graphic novel version, and it is already in the hands of the third reader who will start reading it on Monday. The student who is reading Curlfriends walked over to me and said, \"I think this book was written just for me.\" So, students are into these books!\r\n\r\nGraphic novels are great for keeping students' attention with their strong images and fast pace. They help create connections between words and images to deepen students' understanding of the storyline. This new collection provides books to students of different reading abilities and interests and helps create positive reading experiences for all students.","fullyFundedDate":1746786963831,"projectUrl":"project/graphic-novels-for-our-classroom-library/9252087/","projectTitle":"Graphic Novels for Our Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Mark","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2510055_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728251843670","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/team20"},{"teacherId":2510055,"projectId":9218254,"letterContent":"Thank you, Amanda and Linda, for supporting our classroom with your generous contribution to fund our Donors Choose project! My third grade students are so happy to have this collection of new audio books. My students love to read during the thirty minutes of independent reading that follows lunch recess each day.\r\n\r\nAs we sat together and I introduced each of the new books, many students were eager to get their hands on one of them. A High Five for Glenn Burke, about the San Francisco Giants baseball player, is being read and has a waiting list six kids long on a post-it tucked inside the front cover. Maybe it will be a spark for a kid who is LGBTQ and plays sports to feel more welcome or for one of my students to be more welcoming to others on the field. Students are also reading The Civil War of Amos Abernathy, Just Lizzie, and Too Bright to See. I read Melissa by Alex Gino to my class earlier this spring. It's about a transgender girl who is trying to understand herself and share who she is with the rest of the world. I am glad that we could update our classroom library with more books and audiobooks featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender characters.\r\n\r\nAs teacher, I know that my students become stronger readers by reading independently. With this donation, students are able to listen while reading along to books, which creates more entry points for my students to access great literature. The Hilda books are particularly popular and have a waiting list. Students are familiar with them from the Netflix series and are eager to read them in order. Silvia & Aki and Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring are titles included in our school districts Book Bowl for fourth graders. Students highlighted what they thought was important in their article, identified themes within their highlighting, and are currently taking notes by paraphrasing. Students will soon write their rough draft in Google Docs to ready their writing for display in our hallway.\r\n\r\nThrough this project, we will focus on the contributions of African Americans from the past and the present.
