I had more 7th grade students involved this year than ever before! What was also really exciting was that many who chose to participate were my more reluctant readers. This solidified the impact of adding a layer of competition to things being a real motivator for our middle school students. We were also incredibly lucky to have such great titles this year that sparked a high level of student interest. \r\n\r\nTo increase student engagement, I allowed participants the opportunity to complete reader response questions to earn extra credit towards the English/Language Arts grade. Each time a student finished reading a book, they were also given a raffle ticket. At the end our reading competition, students had the chance to win one of three raffle baskets prizes filled with candy/treats. \r\n\r\nAll of these added incentives really added to student participation, however, none of this would have been possible without having these wonderful books available to students.
