We started with self-portraits, which is how my students introduce themselves to our classroom community at the beginning of the year. They used the Cray-Pas to draw themselves and then washed liquid watercolor over the top, and the moment they saw the color slide right past their oil pastel lines, the whole room reacted.\r\n\r\nWhen the box came in, I opened it in front of them, which may have been a mistake because we lost about ten minutes to sheer excitement. Five-year-olds know the difference between the dried-up classroom leftovers and brand new supplies. Several of them asked if the paint was \"the kind grown-up artists use\".\r\n\r\nNext, we're connecting our art to our writing. My students are beginning to illustrate their own stories, and my goal is for them to see picture and word as two halves of the same job, the way the illustrators of the books we read together do it. Thank you for giving my students the materials to make something they're proud of. Our Kindergarten classroom runs on the Science of Reading, which means my students need to physically build words, not just look at them, and until now I simply didn't have enough hands-on tools for 22 five-year-olds to do that at the same time. That changed the week these arrived. The primary lined dry erase boards mean every student can write a sound or a word the second I ask for it, and the lines matter more than people expect: my students are learning where a letter sits, not just what it looks like. \r\n\r\nThe magnetic letter tiles, Snap & Build sets, Make-A-Word pockets, and CVC word building cards have become an integral part of our current small group rotations. My students thought I had handed them a pile of games. They did not know they were doing reading work, which is exactly how I wanted it to go. The letter crayons and the snapping pieces in particular got a very positive reaction!\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the tools they need to learn to read. It arrived during our first weeks of Kindergarten, and it has already changed how our classroom runs. One side lives as our phonics side: that's where I model letter formation, build words with magnetic letters, and where students come up to \"be the teacher\" and stretch out sounds for the class. The other side is our pocket chart for interactive work. \r\n\r\nBecause it's on wheels, I can roll it from the carpet to our small-group table in about five seconds, which means a lesson that starts as a whole group can turn into targeted practice with the students who need another round. Last week during our sentences vs words vs letters lesson, I had students come up one at a time to place a card choice, and the whole class was leaning forward to see whose turn was next.\r\n\r\nBeing the teacher at the board is now one of the things they look forward to, and it has become a genuine motivator for the routines and self-control we're practicing every day.\r\n\r\nNext, we're moving into starting to blend CVC words. My goal is for the easel to belong to the students more than it belongs to me. I want them using it during literacy stations to build words, practice handwriting, and show their thinking to a partner. For kindergartners who are just learning that they are readers and writers, standing at a big board in front of their class is a huge confidence builder. Thank you for giving them that.
