When we unboxed the sets, especially the rocket ship and fairies, the students' eyes lit up. The arrival of the rocket ship was well-timed with the launching of the Artemis II in April. \r\n\r\nBecause the resources feature familiar, highly appealing themes, children who typically play alongside one another were more easily drawn to the same tables. The hands-on, inviting nature of the toys gave all students, regardless of their verbal abilities, a shared visual focal point. With coaching, students using AAC devices were using them to interact with their peers to share in the fun.\r\n\r\nThese new thematic resources have transformed our play time into vibrant hubs of storytelling and peer interaction. We've been using them to intentionally model and build sociodramatic play. They have been encouraging the students to move beyond basic imitation (like rolling the bus back and forth) toward structured, multi-step storylines (like the building homes out of blocks and having the bus stop at each house to pick up different students to board the bus to school).\r\n\r\nDuring a recent play time, multiple students had fun combining the travel camper and wild animal oasis toys. One child used an AAC device to press the button for \"bear,\" while another set up the campsite. Together, they developed a full rescue narrative: the camper broke down, the fire engine was called in to help, and the team worked together to protect the animals from a \"storm.\" Without adult prompting, the children assigned roles, negotiated who got to drive, and sequenced the events using rich vocabulary like \"emergency,\" \"habitat,\" and \"rescue.\"\r\n\r\nAs our 4-year-old kindergartners continue to build confidence with these play sets, our next learning steps focus on deepening their narrative and sequencing skills:\r\n\r\nOral Retelling: Students will begin to share their stories with the class during circle time and through video with their adults at home.\r\n\r\nCross-Curricular Vocabulary Integration: We will continue embedding theme-specific vocabulary into daily lessons, for example, using the Animal Kingdom Blocks and Wild Animal Oasis to teach descriptive adjectives, spatial concepts, and action verbs during both guided instruction and independent play.\r\n\r\nMy students have already had hours of fun and enriched play due to this grant and I can't wait to see what the next group of students will do!","fullyFundedDate":1774963819841,"projectUrl":"project/increasing-vocabulary-in-our-inclusive-4/10001806/","projectTitle":"Increasing Vocabulary in Our Inclusive 4k Classroom Through Imaginative Play","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Breitlow","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8435083_orig.jpg?crop=4000,4000,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1651250432533","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/breitlow"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_38042","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":433,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":18,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":81,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"22.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":92.9,"schoolId":38042,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Woodview Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Woodview Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/grafton-school-district/woodview-elementary-school/38042"}
