We started by introducing our new book \"A Little Spot of Feelings\" and stuffed emojis, which beautifully helped the children connect their thoughts to different colors and emotions. As we passed around the new tools, including the hand2mind emotion bottles and Numberblocks sensory bottles, the kids were instantly making connections to the specific feelings each item represented. They especially loved looking in the new handheld mirrors to make faces that matched their different moods. It was incredible to see how quickly and enthusiastically they engaged with these resources right out of the box.\r\n\r\nTo put these wonderful tools into action, we completely transformed our classroom's calm down area. We already had a bean bag chair, but the addition of the new tent and large pillow created a truly inviting and secure environment. All of our emotion-regulating tools—including chew necklaces to help with focus, noise-canceling earmuffs, and a classroom favorite, the rainbow timer—are now kept in a special basket inside the tent. Because regulating big emotions can be really tough when you are only four years old, we made sure every student got a \"practice turn\" in the tent so they could experience it as a safe, quiet space before actually needing it to cool down. They loved it so much that they kept asking, \"When is my turn for the tent?\"\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, this project has perfectly fulfilled our need for a dedicated calm down corner where students can take a few minutes to process feeling sad, mad, frustrated, or tired before rejoining the class in a ready-to-learn state of mind. My next steps are to begin rotating the different tools we received so the students can discover what works best for them, as well as introduce the new weighted items for them to explore. We will also dive into our new books and continue practicing our breathing techniques. This project has been a phenomenal addition to our 4K classroom, and our eager students are thriving as we continue to promote the message that all feelings are okay!","fullyFundedDate":1765004174717,"projectUrl":"project/calming-corner-for-big-emotions/9744309/","projectTitle":"Calming Corner for Big Emotions","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Meronk","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3528253"},{"teacherId":8580139,"projectId":9488885,"letterContent":"In 4K, math books, felt boards, I Spy, and Splat the Cat build a full learning world. My students have enjoyed learning basic math concepts through these stories; they make math real-world and relatable. Felt boards let tiny hands move pieces to learn the order of a story and develop coordination. Retelling is an important skill that we work on starting as early as 4K, and these felt stories are a great tool. I Spy books build the sharp focus needed to tell letters apart later. Finally, Splat the Cat helps kids handle big feelings like first-day jitters. Together, these tools develop the logic, motor skills, and heart every child needs to grow and thrive in their first classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donations; without them, this project would not have been fulfilled. The donation gave us books, puzzles, culturally diverse playdough colors, and puppets that reflect many cultures. These new materials are helping my students explore empathy, creativity, and inclusion while having fun. We are using the books for storytime to talk about kindness and understanding others, the puzzles to build teamwork and problem-solving skills, and the playdough and puppets for dramatic play and creative expression that celebrates diversity.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was during our first \"Puppet Kindness Show.\" Students worked in pairs to create short stories using the puppets, sharing scenarios where characters showed kindness to friends. Their excitement was contagious! When they first saw the materials, their eyes lit up, and they immediately wanted to explore every color of playdough and try out every puppet. It was clear that the donation made learning feel joyful and personal.\r\n\r\nWe plan to connect these materials to our ongoing lesson on community and friendship. This project will continue to grow, helping students practice empathy, celebrate differences, and bring their creative ideas to life in meaningful ways.","fullyFundedDate":1737406205037,"projectUrl":"project/kindness-in-colors/9072487/","projectTitle":"Kindness in Colors","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Webb","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8580139"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37575","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":183,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"9.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":70.2,"schoolId":37575,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/antigo-unified-school-district/west-elementary-school/37575"}
