They couldn't wait to take turns standing behind it, straightening their notes, and practicing their speeches \"for real.\" It may seem like a simple addition to the classroom, but to my sixth graders, that podium represents something bigger—it's a symbol of confidence and leadership.\r\n\r\nWe've been using it during our civics unit as students present persuasive speeches and debates on issues that matter to them, from community service to protecting the environment. Having a real podium has changed the atmosphere in the room; students stand taller, speak louder, and take their roles as presenters more seriously. One student told me it made her feel like she was \"really in Congress,\" and another said it gave him the courage to volunteer to speak first—something he had never done before.\r\n\r\nThis project has helped my students understand that civic engagement starts with having a voice and being willing to use it. The podium has become a proud fixture in our classroom, and we'll continue using it for speeches, presentations, and even mock trials throughout the year. Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to stand and deliver with confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1755735176827,"projectUrl":"project/stand-deliver-civic-voices-in-action/9602253/","projectTitle":"Stand & Deliver: Civic Voices in Action","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sabrina Sears","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4686373_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1721356954753","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sabsears"},{"teacherId":5961370,"projectId":3867778,"letterContent":"My students were overjoyed with the 3d pens that were donated to my classroom. We were able to build several projects with the pens and build 3 dimensional models. This served students in all 3 grades and they spent all of their spare time in class working with them. We are also learning to recreate historical places. My students made models of the parthenon, eiffel tower, and various other architectural buildings and did research on the engineering that went into each of the models. They would build them in pieces on a flat and then connect them with the 3d pen vertically. They were very pleased with the outcomes.","fullyFundedDate":1551543841515,"projectUrl":"project/bring-us-to-the-3rd-dimension/3867778/","projectTitle":"Bring Us to the 3rd Dimension","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Basham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5961370_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1541275254597","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5961370"},{"teacherId":4686373,"projectId":8505915,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you enough for your generous support in bringing these incredible historical fiction projects to life in my 6th-grade classroom. With your help, we were able to complete three meaningful projects using Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo, Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, and Countdown by Deborah Wiles. These books brought history alive for my students, and the experiences we shared have left a lasting impact.\r\n\r\nThrough Private Peaceful, my students immersed themselves in the emotional realities of World War I, understanding the personal cost of war. With Out of the Dust, they connected with the struggles of the Great Depression, reflecting on resilience and the human spirit during challenging times. And in Countdown, they explored the Cold War era, grappling with the tensions and fears of that period while discussing themes of family and friendship.\r\n\r\nEach project included hands-on activities, creative writing, and thoughtful discussions that helped my students engage with history on a deeper level. It was incredible to see their excitement, curiosity, and empathy grow as they connected with the characters and learned about these pivotal moments in history. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, I'm thrilled to have used Number the Stars by Lois Lowry to dive into World War II and The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis to study the Civil Rights Movement. These books are helping us further explore history through personal stories, creating a classroom atmosphere where students are eager to learn and share their thoughts.\r\n\r\nYour support has made all of this possible, and I am so grateful for the opportunities you've given my students to connect with history in such a meaningful way. These books and activities have not only improved their reading and critical thinking skills but also sparked a love for learning that I hope will stay with them forever \r\n\r\nThank you for being part of our journey and for making such a difference in the lives of my students!","fullyFundedDate":1727999225630,"projectUrl":"project/enhancing-literacy-through-historical-fi/8505915/","projectTitle":"Enhancing Literacy Through Historical Fiction","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sabrina Sears","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4686373_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1721356954753","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sabsears"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39206","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":590,"numTeachers":50,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":21,"percentWhite":64,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":75.7,"schoolId":39206,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Beckley - Stratton Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Beckley - Stratton Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/west-virginia/raleigh-county-school-district/beckley-stratton-middle-school/39206"}
