My students are using them every day as we learn the fundamentals of piano playing, including reading music, playing melodies and chords, developing proper technique, and performing for one another. Having equipment that can be adjusted to fit each student has made it much easier for them to sit comfortably and focus on the music they are creating.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching students work through pieces together at the pianos. Students who may have been hesitant to play in front of others are becoming more willing to take a turn, experiment with different notes, and share what they have learned. The new equipment has helped make the pianos feel less like classroom furniture and more like real musical instruments that students are excited to use.\r\n\r\nWhen the new materials first arrived, the students were immediately curious and excited. They noticed the new benches and stands and wanted to try them out. Some students were especially excited that the benches could be adjusted to their height. It was a small change physically, but it made a big impression on them because they could immediately feel the difference. It also gave us an opportunity to talk about why posture, positioning, and taking care of our bodies are important parts of being a musician.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building students' independence at the piano. We are currently working on reading and performing music while developing the skills they need to eventually play independently. As students become more comfortable with the keyboard, we will begin incorporating more opportunities for composition and creativity, allowing them to create their own musical ideas rather than simply reproducing music from a page. My hope is that these pianos become a place where students feel comfortable experimenting, making mistakes, and discovering what they can create.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation and the Bezos Family Foundation for investing in our students and our music program.
