Having access to a new book that students can relate to on multiple levels and still learn something significant from is a gift in itself, but to be able to have access to something so new was an additional thrill for my students in our low-income, title 1, school. The students really wwere invested in Alex's journey and had some rich and interesting discussion about his choices and other aspects of the book they could relate too, which were many.\r\nAdditionally, students were able to expand their vocabulary and work on their writing skills. It was the most fun for me as a teacher to watch them connect with the text and have interesting and deep conversations with their peers regarding the feeling of belonging, the desire to feel like they belong to a family, and doing the right thing. All important topics for middle schoolers. Most importantly, was their lesson on the Holocaust and hearing the experience and hardships so many people endured through the eyes of a relatable character. Students were inspired by the story of Olka and went on to discuss situations or moments they could be helpful by doing small things that can lead to a big difference.\r\nStudents left this book with a deeper understanding of not only the Holocaust, but also themselves and we are all extremely appreciative of the generosity from those who allowed us to experience this amazing book together in class!!","fullyFundedDate":1728006244000,"projectUrl":"project/love-for-reading-while-creating-real-con/8520606/","projectTitle":"Love for Reading While Creating Real Connection to the Holocaust","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Logan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9563710"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36857","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":824,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":71.1,"schoolId":36857,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lewis & Clark Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lewis & Clark Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/yakima-school-district-7/lewis-clark-middle-school/36857"}
