Despite cramming it into the final weeks of the school year, when most students are checked out, my 10th graders became immediately invested in Chris McCandless's story and the themes of transcendentalism! I got to watch 15 & 16 year olds who claim to not be interested in anything other than \"TikTok Brain Rot\" identifying elements of transcendentalism in Chris McCandless's life, and then connect/identify those same themes to modern songs. We even got to go read & work outside a few times, to emphasize the reverence for nature that is central to the book! Students took their job of annotating seriously, and filled up their books with sticky notes tracking evidence to support their own opinions about Chris, and picking out their favorite well-written sentences to learn from. \r\n\r\nStudents concluded the unit by creating one pagers- a choice of each a mind map of Chris McCandless or an analysis of multiple key symbols in the story. This was an awesome entry point into the often daunting world of poetry. Even my reluctant learners were enticed by the hands-on aspect of the magnets and felt inspired by working within the parameters of the words they had available to them, rather than overwhelmed by the endless possibilities of the entire English language. \r\n\r\nThe Great Gatsby was an absolute hit with my juniors. Many claimed it to be their favorite book we read in the entire year, and demonstrated remarkable investment and analysis in the symbolism of the book, despite racing through it in the final weeks of the year when most students are checked out. It was truly inspiring to see them finding relevance in a novel written a century ago, and learning to appreciate the complex but beautiful prose of Fitzgerald (as pictured in the sticky note annotations). They ended the novel unit by creating one pagers analyzing color symbolism, thematic lessons, and other symbols in the novel. By doing so, you have opened up a world of possibilities for learning, exploring, and creatin for them. Students are able to watch videos at their own pace (rather than the constant stopping and starting as a whole class) and also learn from videos & podcasts of their own choosing, allowing for more personalization of learning. \r\n\r\nStudents are also able to use these headphones to create/edit their own videos & podcasts for classes such as English 11 as well as Business & Social Media writing. While many students have their own personal headphones, they usually are wireless and not compatible with their school Chromebooks.
