The students who benefitted are in an Integrated Social-Emotional Program, which is a specialized special education program that focuses on helping students develop the self-regulation and interpersonal skills necessary to eventually transition back to the general education setting. They have disabilities that make it difficult for them to function in a standard classroom at our Mandarin immersion school. All of them had adverse childhood experiences, including loss of parent(s), socio-economic instability, abuse ..., and many are still dealing with factors beyond their control. We (the team: teacher, teaching assistants, specialist like myself) serve a population that has demonstrated incredible resilience in the face of disproportionate life challenges.
