With the help of calming balls and sensory toys, my students are now taking short breaks in the middle of our activities to relax and self-regulate. These tools have had a noticeably positive impact, students return to their work feeling refreshed, more focused, and ready to learn. They've been excited and happy to use these items during their break times.\r\nIn math, we've been incorporating engaging whiteboard activities to reinforce multiplication skills. Each Thursday, we display multiplication problems on the smart board, and students solve them individually on their personal whiteboards. Once they've solved the problem, they raise their boards to share their answers. It's a fun and friendly competition that keeps them motivated and energized. Students who answer the most questions correctly receive small prizes, which adds to the excitement and encourages participation.\r\nTo keep our materials organized and easily accessible, we are using small plastic bins. These bins help store multiplication tables, number lines, and class-wise quiz papers. Students take responsibility for their own materials, which not only supports organization but also encourages independence and ownership of their learning.\r\nThe students are not only enjoying these interactive and hands-on approaches, but they are also gaining confidence in solving multiplication problems. Our next steps will focus on ensuring all students master the concepts through continued practice, collaboration, and support. These tools provide an outlet for students to release excess energy and reduce anxiety, allowing them to better engage with lessons. For students with attention-related challenges or sensory seeking needs, the fidget tools have been especially helpful as they allow for physical movement without being disruptive, making it easier to concentrate on academic tasks. It's truly amazing to see the positive impact these simple yet effective tools have had on their daily experiences.\r\n\r\nIn addition to supporting concentration, the fidget tools also contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment. Not only did it help them connect with the feelings of being different but it's a popular novel and series that the students can relate to and see unpopular culture. We really enjoyed reading it together as a class and getting to know the characters and asking questions like does Roz have feelings, is she going to change the world? How can someone that's so different change something in a different environment? Students pulled out the most important or interesting quotes to them for each chapter, found new vocabulary, and rested an artistic expression of each chapter that spoke to them. Through this assignment, I found two students in my classroom that I didn't know we're absolute artists and were really into drawing (next up for them? An art elective!). I love discovering new things about my students. My Spanish speakers were able to take the book home and read it in Spanish so they were able to participate and understand more easily.
