Students who might otherwise arrive hungry or struggle to concentrate until lunch are now able to participate fully and access the curriculum with clearer minds. They are learning that everyone is unique and special in their own way. We've seen children point out similarities between themselves and the characters, proudly share their own backgrounds, and show empathy and curiosity toward others who are different from them.\r\n\r\nThe books have also helped build vocabulary and comprehension as students engage with rich language and illustrations that reflect real-world experiences. I've noticed improved social-emotional skills as children use kind, inclusive language and demonstrate respect for one another. Storytime has transformed from simply reading together to creating a space where every child feels seen, valued, and represented.\r\n\r\nThese diversity books have truly enriched our classroom and supported our mission of fostering a community of kindness, understanding, and belonging—values that will guide these young learners for years to come.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make this possible. Through this project, my classroom has become a space filled with curiosity, color, and pride—where students not only learn to read but also connect deeply with their own cultural heritage and the stories of others.\r\n\r\nWhen introducing these new books, I begin by exploring the basic parts of a book with my students. Together, we identify the spine, front cover, back cover, pages, and title, and we talk about the important roles of the author and illustrator. For many of my young learners, this simple activity builds foundational literacy skills—understanding how books work, where to start reading, and how stories are organized. These early lessons are essential in helping them grow as confident, independent readers.\r\n\r\nOnce we begin reading, the room fills with excitement and engagement. My students love listening to stories read aloud, especially those that include Spanish words and phrases. Hearing familiar sounds and words from home woven into the stories makes them beam with pride. The books you helped fund introduce them to new vocabulary, story structures, and cultural traditions—from celebrations like Día de los Muertos to folktales that have been told for generations. Each story is a bridge between their own lives and the larger world around them.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive, joyful experience. We don't just read the words on the page—we discuss the characters, make predictions about what might happen next, and relate the events of the story to our own experiences. After reading, we often do creative follow-up activities like coloring pages inspired by the stories or drawing favorite scenes. These moments allow students to express their understanding through art and conversation, helping to deepen their connection to what they've read.\r\n\r\nSome of my students, who were once hesitant readers, are now the first to raise their hands when it's time for storytime. One student in particular lights up whenever we open a book about Mexican traditions. She proudly points out familiar foods, dances, and songs, and she shares stories from her own family. Seeing her confidence grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than provide books—it has opened doors to imagination, identity, and belonging. My students are learning that reading is not just a skill, but a way to see themselves and others with respect and wonder. They are discovering that their culture is something to celebrate and share with the world.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in the power of stories and for helping my little learners embark on these big discoveries.
