As students walk in they see books looking back at them, and often know what book they want before it's time to checkout. For the younger grades, having a carpet with defined spaces makes them feel like they belong and have a place all there own. The change is an ongoing process, but with the changes that have already been implemented I have seen students have independence during checkout.\r\n\r\nHaving forward facing bins for our most popular books makes it easier for students to find what they are looking for. Having rotating bins allows for exploration of 'new' (forgotten favorite) books. Some favorite books that had not been checked out in a long time were placed forward facing in a bin, and they started to fly off the shelves. Small or odd shaped books often get lost on the shelves, but the bins have helped them become visible and easy to find.\r\n\r\nMy favorite part of this process has been the smiles on my students faces every time they see something new or changed. The headphones I had been using with students were falling apart from having been used by students for the last decade. The students at my school are used to hand-me-down items because they are unable to afford their own headphones for school. With tight budget cuts there were no funds for headphones, even though they are an essential tool students need for learning in the 21st century. Your donations saved the day and students were able to have access to brand new headphones.\r\n\r\nStudents are able to use these headphones for fundamental reading practice, like phonics, to better sound out words as they are reading. Students are also able to access many of the online reading resources to listen to audio books and hear fluent readers read. These headphones are especially helpful to our multilingual learners who are learning English as a second language.\r\n\r\nThe microphone has been so helpful to me this year as I am able to be heard clearly by all students and help project my voice. By learning from these books we can have in-depth discussion about life and the lessons we can learn from literature.\r\n\r\nThe goal of this project was to have new, relevant books that would peak student interest and encourage their love of reading.
