One moment that really stood out was during a recent lesson on multiplying fractions. Students were working in small groups solving real-world problems, and they were able to choose seating that helped them stay focused. Some students picked wobble seats so they could move while working through multi-step problems, while others chose bean bags to sit comfortably with a partner and talk through their thinking. On the rug, we came together as a whole group to share strategies and explain our reasoning. The flexible seating allowed students to stay engaged longer and gave them the confidence to participate more openly in discussions.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the reaction from my students was immediate and full of excitement. They walked into the room and their eyes lit up—they couldn't wait to try everything. There was a lot of energy that first day, but we took time to set clear expectations about how to use the seating in a way that supports learning. What really stood out was how quickly students adapted. They began making thoughtful choices about where they worked best and showed responsibility right away. I noticed that students who usually struggle to stay focused were more engaged, simply because they had the option to move or sit in a way that worked for them. It created a positive shift in the classroom where students felt more comfortable, more in control of their learning, and more willing to participate.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build on this independence as we move into more collaborative and student-driven learning. In our upcoming opinion writing unit and American Revolution research project, students will be working in small groups to gather evidence, share ideas, and develop their thinking. The flexible seating will allow them to stay comfortable and focused during longer work periods, which is especially important as tasks become more complex. Students will also continue practicing making intentional choices about their learning environment—thinking about where they do their best work and how they can stay engaged.\r\n\r\nThese resources have done more than change where students sit—they have helped create a classroom environment that supports focus, collaboration, and confidence. My students are more engaged, more independent, and more willing to take academic risks. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, my classroom is a place where students feel supported and excited to learn every day.","fullyFundedDate":1769463539721,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating/10060715/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Johnson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10418778"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36627","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":309,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":67,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":60.0,"schoolId":36627,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ridgeview Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ridgeview Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/spokane-public-schools/ridgeview-elementary-school/36627"}
