The kids were so excited about the new materials. I was talking, playing games, and having so much fun with the students that I forgot to snap pictures in the moment. One moment that really stood out to me was seeing four students who don't normally interact or get along well playing Chutes and Ladders together. Not only were they being kind to one another, but they were genuinely enjoying playing together!\r\n\r\nMy students' gasps of surprise when they first saw the games truly caught me off guard. Many of my students love their computers, phones, and tablets, but they were genuinely excited to see new board games! It was a great reminder that sometimes simple, hands-on activities can create just as much excitement.\r\n\r\nMy next step is incorporating these games into my regular rotation of class rewards. I have several classes that are getting close to earning class celebrations, and I know they will really enjoy having these games as an option during choice time. These planets are then shown to families and future students where the students that created the planets, share their completed work and facts they learned from the unit about the various planets. Students are allowed to keep these model planets, giving them a memory for their learning from 5th grade. These planets are then displayed for families and future students to come and see in the classroom. While students are presenting their project, families learn about all the different planets in our solar system, giving each student an opportunity to display their work. The materials allow my students an opportunity for hands on learning, and allow them to show a visual to match the facts they are sharing to families. Origami is an amazing way for students to show their creative side, that doesn't require them to do any drawing. Each week, my students participate in art projects. While some truly enjoy drawing, others want to show their artistic skills through folding paper. About once a month, I assign projects for origami in their Google Classroom and allow them to follow the directions from the site, and fold the creations from those directions. My students are amazing at folding origami and have even asked to take paper home, in order for them to teach family members how to fold the creations. By having these Rubik's Cubes, my students will be allowed to use these tools during our multiple breaks, while using their brains to focus on something other than what may have been stressing them out. I place these cubes in our Calming Down area in the classroom and allow full access to the cubes for my students to use throughout the day.
