My students brainstormed a list of books they wished we had in our class library. These are books that we did not yet have in our library but in their dream library these books would be there. They were so excited and amazed when these books randomly showed up in the library thank you to your generous support! The looks on their faces was priceless. I quickly plucked the ABC Axolotl book out of the pile and read it to the class. They loved it and all wanted a chance to read it on their own. Many of my students saw new series of books in our class library they had never seen before. They began looking through the pictures, then they began trying reading some of the words. They became very interested in learning to read the words because they wanted to read the stories so badly. They began focusing hard in phonics and reading lessons. They began practicing sight words at home. Soon they could read the words in the books. Once they discovered they could read the books they never looked back devouring book after book after book! These new books that arrived were met with excitement and they are being read and passed on so quickly!! Reading is a skill that is essential. Most my students entered as emergent readers. They liked reading but most had not found that gateway series that sucked them down the rabbit hole of being a bookworm. My students were introduced to new books this year and many discovered new series' that they just fell in love with. Discovering these series books made them start devouring books at a rapid pace. I just couldn't keep up with them with the collection I had. This project provided a bunch of books in their must read lists. They were so thrilled and just couldn't wait to get their hands on the books! It was so fun to eat h their excited faces light up as they saw the books and were reading the backs and discussing the order in which they would read the books. My students love reading and as first graders they have already fell in love with books. It is so fun to match this develop. Many of my students came in barely knowing how to read and are now fluent and above grade level. It also has been use for math and reading. Word work is one of the independent activities my students do when I am pulling small reading groups. The materials this project provided are at a variety of levels just like my class. The s'mores cvc game have been perfect for my students learning to spell cvc words. It is hands on and engaging. The word ladders have also been a big hit and match up to the phonics skills we are learning in UFLI. The biggest hit hands down is the phonics dominos. My students love them so much!
