The books competing each year are usually a diverse mix of authors, topics and formats and it pushes our readers out of their comfort zones.\r\n\r\nThis year the books written in verse were especially surprising to my students as they used poetry to tackle tough issues that my readers weren't expecting to find in this format. Faker, a class favorite, has made it to the Elite 8 at this point and the kiddos have been excited every week so far to learn matchups and see which books move on.\r\n\r\nSurprisingly it's some of the books that don't win that end up clamored for as students express their surprise and support of those titles.
